Reckoning, Inc. Kentucky U.S. Colored Troops Project Intern Job Description

Kentucky U.S. Colored Troops Project seeks to uncover archival documents about the lives of Kentucky’s formerly enslaved Civil War soldiers and disseminate them through a free, searchable online database. It is a project of the non-profit organization Reckoning, Inc.

We are looking for student interns from colleges and universities to help us research African American soldiers. For this project, we are using a combination of military records, pension documents, Freedman’s Bank records, census data, and other resources, to create a set of primary source documents for each man and his family, coupled with a detailed family tree. The results of all this research will then be published on our website ( and be made freely available to the public. Interns will be assigned specific research tasks that will aid us in this project, working closely with our Reckoning, Inc. staff.

At this time, our paid internship positions are filled, but we have several unpaid internships available. Per week time commitments for unpaid internships are variable, based on other academic commitments. At least 8-10 hours per week would be ideal. This work would be done remotely using a combination of Slack and Zoom to communicate with project staff. Interns will be credited on our website for their participation in this project and we will cooperate with faculty and school administrators in terms of interns receiving academic credit for their work.

An ideal candidate for this internship has some experience reading hand-written archival documents. Knowledge of 19th century history, the Civil War, and/or slavery would also be a plus. Lastly, they will need to have access to at least a free account to do this work.
