Company: C Regiment(s): 5th USCC
Mustered Where: Louisville, KY
Mustered Out Date: March 16, 1866
Rank at Muster Out: Corporal
Notes:

A major discrepancy was noted in the physical appearance of the soldier in the CMSR as it differed from that in the Descriptive Ledger. While the soldier was listed as 5’6 1/2″ tall in both documents, the CMSR described him as having a yellow complexion, blue eyes and yellow hair. The ledger described him as having a dark complexion, dark eyes and dark hair. All other pertinent dates as to enlistment and muster were the same. In that the ledger is a recreated document with the soldiers listed alphabetically and the list on the ledger has descriptive information carried over from several entries prior to the soldier (marked with ” “), it is presumed that the description in the CMSR is accurate and reflects the soldier’s service record.

Family Notes:

The probate document for Jonathan Dodson that was located in Family Search divided among his heirs those individuals who were enslaved along with real estate after the enslaver’s death. Both Hines and the soldier (Ludwell) were listed together in the list of males. In the course of other research during which documents of this type have been located, siblings often were listed together.

In addition, prior research regarding Hines Beam identified his enslaver as R.G. Foster. Research reflected R.G. Foster was the husband of Dodson’s daughter, Bettie, to whom Hines (Hynes) was one of 3 enslaved individuals received by her. Based upon this development and Hines and Ludwell being listed together in the inventory of the enslaved individuals in this document, it is believed that it is more likely than not that Ludwell and Hines were siblings.

Soldier’s death date was located in Ancestry – U.S. Veterans Administration Master Index.

In 1910, the soldier appears to have remarried as the census in Ancestry shows he and his wife, Leddie, married for 3 years with one child, Abraham, age 2. Leddie is shown as the mother of one child with that child living. Other records indicated that following the death of his first wife (14 Oct 1903), the soldier, age 60, married Lyda Sumners, age 30 (abt 1876), on 8 Sept 1906 in Nelson County, KY.

In that the soldier passed in 1914, the 1920 census is for the soldier’s daughter, Mattie, by his first marriage to Maria H. Beam nee Porter (go to second link a Find a Grave Index Record to see full name as written). The employment, education and residence information is for Mattie and her husband William Baker (also written as Barker). William was a Stock Press Laborer and Mattie had no employment listed. The soldier’s second wife, Lyda (Lettie/Leddie/Luttie), nor their son Abraham Beam, could be located on the 1920 census. Death record information for Lyda in 1935 and for Abraham in 1969 was located.

Enslaver Information

Name: R.G. Foster Location: Bloomfield, Nelson County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver: Jonathan Dodson
Enslaver Notes:

The 1863 Division of Property documents for the estate of Jonathan Dodson revealed that he was the enslaver of Hines Foster (then known as Hines Beam. R. G. Foster was not soldier’s enslaver until after 1863. The 1850 and 1860 data entry fields represent information about Jonathan Dodson.

The 1860 slave schedule for Jonathan Dodson consisted of two pages, with the probable Hines Foster being noted on the second page listing.

R.G. Foster, married Elizabeth Dodson in Nelson County, KY, in May 1859 (he was 40 and she was 19), the 1860 population census shows the enslaver, age 40, a Blacksmith, has head of a household with those living with him as B.M. Foster, a 19 year old female. Although the initials do not match her name of Elizabeth M. Foster nee Dodson, it appears likely that this is the enslaver’s wife. In addition, it was noted that there was a “Plough Stocker” named I.M. Wells, age 25, and a Blacksmith named Elijah Curry, age 23, enumerated. Curry’s was noted as being Black. It was further noted that the next family enumerated on the census was W.M. Foster, 72, and Elenor Foster, 61, both from Virginia. Although the enslaver’s parents were not identified in the course of the research, it is appears likely that these were relatives of the enslaver.

The 1870 and 1880 census schedules are for the enslaver’s wife and children in 1870 and the enslaver’s wife, children and new husband (Charles Williams) in 1880 following her apparent remarriage after his death in 1869. The 1880 census also suggests that the enslaver and his wife had 3 children consisting of Emma Foster (1860), John D. Foster (1863) and Effie Foster (1865). They are listed as step children to Charles on the 1880 census. It was further noted that in 1870 and 1880, Bettie Foster’s mother, Savilla Dodson, is living in the household. Of particular note in 1870, Bettie’s household also consisted of two Mulatto females, Sarah Mason, 18, and Nancy Davis, 16. Respectively set forth are their relationships to head of household as Domestic Servant and House Girl.
