On the night of August 20, 1865, Thomas Sherwood and several other soldiers of his regiment were arrested for mutiny at Greenville, Tennessee. He was sentenced to the penitentiary at Nashville, Tennessee, for violating an article of war and for conduct “prejudicial to good order and military discipline.” He was to serve a 10-year sentence. On Dec. 24, 1865, Sherwood’s wife Martha wrote a letter requesting that the army release him from the penitentiary, pleading that her husband had a large family of small children and an old mother to support. The army refused her application for his release. (It is not known how long he served. He was married in Knoxville on August 20, 1866, and is listed in the 1870 census with his family.)
