Freedman’s Bank/Freedmen’s Bureau Information

Freedman’s Bank Notes:

Three Freedman’s Bank records were found for Anthony Buckles aka Anthony Boarman. The first record, dated December 15, 1866, included not only Anthony Buckles/Boarman’s record, but also bank records for his four brothers, all of whom served in the 107th USCI. The information for all five Boarman brothers was very similar (all lived in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and their father was Hanson Boarman, etc.). One difference was that Anthony Buckles/Boarman had a different enslaver–Alfred Buckles (1825-1879). The second record was undated. Anthony Buckles’s brother George Boarman was the only one of his brothers who was included on this bank record page. There were two conflicting pieces of personal information on the undated bank record. Anthony Buckles is described as “Yellow” (vs. “Black” on other records), and his “Mistress” was named as “Susan E.” “Susan E.” was Susan Elizabeth Boarman Buckles, wife of Alfred Buckles, and the daughter of the soldier’s original enslaver, Sylvester Boarman (1801-1854). The third Freedman’s Bank record was dated November 22, 1867. His enslaver was identified as Alfred Buckles and Anthony Buckles was described as “Yellow.” No information was given for his parents. He was not married and had no children. None of his brothers appeared on this Freedman’s Bank record page. It was noted that his account was transferred from Louisville, Kentucky, to the Washington, DC Freedman’s Bank. In 1867, Anthony Buckles had $257.50 in the bank. His place of residence was Alexandria, Virginia, and his occupation was “Scholar.” He signed the document in his own hand as “Anthony Buckles.”

Family Notes:

Shortly after they all mustered out of the 107th USCI, Anthony Boarman and his four brothers, purchased a house and lot in Jeffersonville, Indiana. But Anthony Boarman did not linger in Indiana. By 1867, he moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where he married M. Caroline Griffin (1846-1920) in 1868. They had six children but only one was living when Anthony Boarman died in 1905; his daughter, Katherine Boarman (1876-1933). It does not appear that any of the Boarman children married and/or had children of the own. Anthony Boarman used his soldier’s wages and Bounty money to purchase a home in Alexandria. He and his family lived in the two-story brick row house in Alexandria until the soldier’s widow’s death in 1920. The 1880 Census revealed that, at the time, the Boarman residence was worth $300. Today, their house at 211 Franklin Street in Alexandria, is valued at over $1 million.

1870 Census Notes:

Anthony Boarman (enumerated as “Anthony Bowman”) 23 (age incorrect, closer to 30), was a laborer. He owned $300 in real estate (likely the house on Franklin Street). He shared the house with his wife “Caroline Bowman” [Boarman], age 18, and their son “Willie Bowman” [Boarman], age one. Also in the household was Susan Green, age 8, Black, born in Virginia, who was identified in the 1880 Census as an adopted daughter; and boarder named “Ind. Swansburg,” age 16, white, a dressmaker, who was born in Virginia. According to the Census, neither Anthony nor Caroline Boarman could read or write, but this was most likely incorrect–at least for Anthony Boarman. He signed his Freedman’s Bank records in 1866, and, according to the 1880 Census, he could read and write.

Enslaver Information

Name: Alfred Buckles Location: Hardin County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver: Sylvester Boarman
Enslaver Notes:

Anthony Buckles aka Anthony Boarman was originally enslaved by Sylvester Boarman (1801-1854), who was born in Maryland, and died in Hardin County. The Boarman family was Roman Catholic. When Sylvester Boarman died in 1854, his estate was dispersed to his heirs, including his enslaved persons. His daughter, Susan Elizabeth Boarman Buckles (1828-1891), was one of his heirs. In 1846, She married Alfred Buckles (1825-1879) of Hardin County. It is likely that when Susan Boarman Buckles inherited Anthony Boarman from her father’s estate that her husband, Alfred Buckles, became Anthony Boarman’s enslaver. According to the 1860 Slave Schedule, Alfred Buckles enslaved two men: one mulatto male, age 30; and one Black male, age 28. Either of these two enslaved men could be a match for Anthony Buckles aka Anthony Boarman. In 1879, Alfred Buckles died in 1879 in Hardin County. A few years later, Susan Boarman Buckles moved to Sangamon County, Illinois where she died in 1891.
