Notes:

Two CMSR files were retrieved for the soldier. The second CMSR included enlistment and declaration of recruit documents.

Stowers takes ill almost immediately from the time of his enlistment and appears on the Hospital Muster Roll card for Seminary U.S.A. Gen’l Hosp at Covington, Ky from Sept/Oct 1864 to Mar 1865. On March 22, 1865 he is admitted/attached to L’Ouverture U.S.A. Gen’l Hosp at Alexandria, Va and remains hospitalized/on assignment until his death Sept. 29, 1865. Cause of death is listed as inflammation of the lungs. He does appear on Company muster roll cards through 1867 and evidently this caused some confusion when his records were compiled; he is on the Returns card as being absent d/t sickness for his entire enlistment when in fact he died in Sept. 1865. Stowers had not received his bounty payment and was last paid through June 1865. On the record of death and interment, nearest relative is noted to be Samuel Stowers of Covington, Ky. It would seem the family moved to Covington at the time of his enlistment and never returned to Pendleton County.

The Returns card is incorrect in that it indicates he was hospitalized from enlistment until the company mustered out in 1867. For some reason, he was marked Absent – sick in hospital long after his death in 1865.
