Freedman’s Bank Notes:

On December 15, 1866, George Boarman deposited $200 in the Freedman’s Bank, most likely his Bounty money that he received after mustering out. His “Master” was identified Sylvester Boarman (1801-1854). But in fact, his enslaver at the time of enlistment was Richard Columbus Craycroft, the late Sylvester Boarman’s son-in-law. George Boarman listed his father as Hanson Boarman. No name was provided for his mother. No children or spouse were listed. George Boarman’s residence was given as Jeffersonville, Indiana. A second Freedman’s Bank record (undated) provided slightly different information. It stated that George Boarman’s enslaver was “Columbus Craycroft.” His “Mistress” was “Mary C.” (Mary Boarman Craycroft). George Boarman was described as 5’3” tall with a “light brown” complexion. No parents were named and he was not married. At the time that the undated Freedman’s Bank record was filed, George Boarman lived in Meade County, which was also where his former enslaver, Richard Columbus Craycroft lived. Family Notes:

George Boarman was one of the five Boarman brothers who served in the 107th USCI. According to newspaper records, the Boarman brothers purchased a house and lot on the southwest corner of the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Sixth Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana, shortly after being mustered out of the 107th USCI in Washington, DC. The house remained in the family until around 1905 when it became the subject of a complicated estate settlement involving as many as 40 heirs. The house no longer stands and was one of many houses razed in Jeffersonville to make way for Interstate 65.

1870 Census Notes:

In 1870, George Boarman, age 35, lived in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in a household headed by his brother, Cornelius Boarman, age 25. Cornelius Boarman owned the home valued at $1,000. Cornelius Boarman’s wife Mary Boarman, age 20, and their son, Francis H. Boarman, age one, were also present. This house, located at the corner of Indiana Avenue and Sixth Street in Jeffersonville, later became the centerpiece of an estate with dozens of heirs. Also in the household was the Boarman brothers’ sister, Sophia Boarman, age 19 (mistakenly identified in the Census as George Boarman’s wife); Clara Boarman, age (assumed to be their mother but none of the Boarman siblings named her as their mother in records—only their father, Hanson Boarman was mentioned); and Horace Wesley Boarman age 22, (brother to George, Cornelius, and Sophia), who worked on the nearby Ohio River as a steamboat hand.
