Alfred enlisted as a private into Co. A, 108, U.S. Colored Infantry. On August 12th, 1864 he transferred to Co. I, 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry. Alfred was promoted to corporal on October 30, 1864 and to sergeant on December 26, 1865. He mustered out as a sergeant on March 16, 1866 in Helena, Arkansas. On March 28, 1867, Daniel Polk of Shelby County, Kentucky applied for a slave compensation and stated he purchased Alfred in 1853.
