Enslaver Information
Name: Mrs. Ray Location: Nelson County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver:
Enslaver Notes:
According to the Ledger, Mrs. Ray was Gray’s enslaver. (The Ledger did not show her first name.) A Freedman’s Bank record under the name of the soldier’s mother — Ary Ann Gray — listed her enslaver as Stephen Gray. An inventory and appraisement of Stephen Gray’s estate contained the names, ages, and values of 31 slaves (plus unnamed infants), including Amy Ann (believed to be Anthony’s mother), Anthony, and Henry. (Henry is in the 1870 household of “Arah S. Gray” – the soldier’s mother.) Stephen Gray died about 1858. After his wife’s death, Mrs. Elizabeth Ray, the name of the enslaver in the Ledger, was to receive some of Stephen Gray’s slaves and land. Elizabeth Ray was listed in the 1870 census but an inventory of her estate was completed in the first week of January, 1871. The link to enslaver census data for 1850 is for Stephen Gray; data for 1860-1870 is for Mrs. Elizabeth Ray. Elizabeth Ray is listed immediately after Stephen Gray in the 1850 slave schedule. Here is a link to the 1850 census for Stephen Gray’s household members. The 1850 census link for him only shows his name at the bottom of the page. His family members were enumerated on the next page.
