Basil died sometime in 1889 or 1890 (based upon information on the pension card). Basil’s son Charles and his family settled in Marion County, Kentucky, and later in Ohio, for example.

According to the Ledger, J. Johnson was the enslaver of Basil Johnson. In 1860, for example, there were 5 men named John Johnson, one of whom was 52 years old, born in Virginia and owned 18 enslaved people. He was the only enslaver named Johnson with an initial J. In the 1850 slave and population schedules, Ralph Cotton was listed immediately after John Johnson’s household. On the death certificate of Charles Johnson who died in 1933 Harriet Johnson’s maiden name was Cotton. (The 1860 slave schedule is on two pages.). The value of Johnson’s real estate increased from $5,800 in 1850, to $11,000 in 1860, and more than doubled to $25,000 in 1870. One of Johnson’s daughters was named Cassie, the same name as Basil Johnson’s daughter.
