Family Notes:

Although children (William and John) were enumerated in Burril Brown’s 1870 census household, it has not been confirmed that he was their birth father. Louisa was enumerated in the 1870 and 1880 census schedules with Burley/Burril Brown, as his presumed wife and wife. A death certificate was not retrieved to confirm date of Louisa Brown’s death, which was prior to 1900.

1870 Census Notes:

Burley Brown was enumerated with a presumed wife, Louisa in Indiana. His name was listed as Burley, rather than Burril, and he was listed with birthplace in Kentucky (not Virginia) and his age does not match what was documented in his military records. In correlating data from the 1880 Clark County, IN census, and the soldier’s pension index card this appears to be the enumeration for Burril Brown, under a different version of his given name. A female, Frances Nelson was enumerated in the 1870 household of Burley and Louisa Brown, and again in the 1880 household. She was described as Burril’s sister-in-law in 1880. Again, the enumerator provided ages for each person that did not match other sources; however, the names and location of Clark County, Indiana provide the probability of a match.

1880 Census Notes:

Again, the ages listed for Burrill and his wife, Louisa (Louisa’s do not match other sources; however, their residence in Jeffersonville, Clark County, IN is consistent between the 1870 and 1880 census schedules and the state of Indiana, from which Burril filed for his invalid pension. A more accurate estimate of Louisia’s age would have been fifty-five years of age, based on the 1870 census. Fannie Nelson was enumerated in the 1880 Brown household as sister-in-law to Burrill. In census enumerations, we rely upon probable secondary information and estimates made by enumerators.

1900 Census Notes:

In 1900 a Burl Brown was enumerated as a widower in Jeffersonville, Clark County, IN. His birth place was noted as Virginia, which is consistent with his military sources. Brown’s street address in 1900 was 1209 Walnut Street. His marital status, widower, was consistent with the status listed on his 1904 death certificate, filed in Clark County, Indiana. His reported age is not consistent with documented ages noted for him in previous census years, his CMSR and death certificate; however, this may represent the census enumeration for the soldier.
