Enslaver Information

Name: Thomas B. Hobbs Location: Nelson County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver: John T. Brown
Enslaver Notes:

The 1850 and 1860 census and slave schedules enumerated enslaver as T. P. Hobbs; however, other evidence in those schedules inferred this was Clinton Hobbs’ documented enslaver. Thomas Hobbs was born in Maryland between 1807 and 1813 according to ages listed in various federal census schedules. His wife, in 1850 was listed as Susan, born about 1810 in Kentucky. In 1860 and 1870, the wife of Thomas was listed as Margaret born in Kentucky about 1820 or 1830. A marriage record was retrieved, documenting the marriage of Thomas B. Hobbs and Margaret Brown in January 1857. Margaret’s maiden name implies a relationship to John T. Brown who was named as the previous enslaver of Clinton Hobbs. in Thomas Hobbs’ compensation documents. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SRRGb4NFxJxlbuz3hlsYMywuwVl2Klna/view?usp=sharing

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
