There were six children born to Harriett and David Jacobs, but only four of them were minors when the widow’s pension application was filed. Death certificates were found for 5 of the 6 children in which their mother’s maiden name was given as Rice and not Bedford. It is unknown where the surnames Bedford and Jacobs originate, as they do not appear in any corroborative documentation from the pension file.

1870 Census Notes:
Harriet and four of her children were living in Paris, Ky in 1870. Harriet is not listed with an occupation or property/personal estate values. The $500 real estate notation was listed with Ellen Jacobs. Also, the names and ages of the children don’t exactly match what is in the widow’s pension file.
Daughter Hester Jacobs is most likely the entry found in the 1870 census for Cynthiana, Ky as the domestic servant in the household of Elizabeth Oxley. Oxley was the enslaver of Harriet and her children and even though Hester is enumerated as “W”, I believe she was actually Harriet’s daughter.
