Located the Veterans Administration widow pension payment card by searching the FamilySearch.org database (Pension Payment cards 1907-1933 ) MANUALLY searched and located card for Emily Bryant cert # 419.892 widow of Edmund Bryant Pt E 123rd USC Vol Inf. The pension index card did not include the widow’s pension application date; however, the Veterans Administration payment card noted 4 April 1894 as the commencement date of the pension.

Soldier died from pleurisy (lung inflammation)Soldier’s son Isaac ( 1858-?) did not marry or have children. daughter Susan (1856-?)married Chas West (1850-1879 consumption) and had one known child Emma. Soldier’s grandaughter Emma (1880-1911bronchitis/malarialfever) married Samuel Johnson and had 5 children. 3 survived: Theodore (1905-1961), Mary A (1907-1925tuberculosis) and Bettie (1909-?). TB may have been the real cause of many of the soldier’s family members death. Many died a premature death of communicable disease, likely the result of crowded living conditions, poor nutrition, & hard work.

Per the military ledger the Soldier’s enslaver was Edward Bryant. A search was conducted for Edward Bryant with name variations sounds alike, exact, similar in 1850/1860/1870 US Census or Slave Schedule of Nelson County and a person of this name was not found. However, there was a Bryant Family in Nelson CO, Ky that owned slaves.

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
