This soldier being researched died 15 August 1865 of acute diarrhea at the post hospital in Vicksburg, MS. His birth location was documented as Madison, KY and Nelson County, KY. Research could not clarify whether it was Madison County, KY or a township in Nelson or another county in Kentucky.

Edmond Gardner’s CMSR appears to include a few pages for another Edmond Gardner who reportedly served in Company B of the 108th USCI and who died in New Albany, IN on 3 August 1864 of typhoid pneumonia; pages 3, and 23-26 of the CMSR file. He was reporteldy born in Nelson County, KY, and enlisted on 17 June 1864 at Louisville, similar to the soldier being researched here.

Pension File Information

Pension File: Pension File
Pensioners:    Anna Edmonia Gardner

Pensioner County:  Jefferson Pensioner State: KY
Number of Pages:
59
Pension Notes:

One child, Anna Edmonia Gardner, filed for a minor pension. Her mother, Emily Hamilton, was married to Edmond and died. She was granted a pension but it never reached her hands, prior to her 1867 death. Moses Gardner was named as the guardian for Anna Edmonia Gardner’s pension application.

Inconsistencies were found in the CMSR and pension file, because there were two Edmond Gardner soldiers documented in the 108th USCI. One served in Company C and the second reportedly served in Company B. The soldier from Company C died in 1865 in Vicksburg, MS; however, the pension file attributed the service of the Edmond Gardner who died in August 1864 in New Albany, IN, to Company C. An 1897 letter from the Bureau of Pension confirmed that the only Edmond Gardner who served in Company C, 108th USCI, died on 15 August 1865.

Enslaver Information

Name: Frank Gardner Location: Nelson County, KY
Previous Enslaver: John Gardner
Enslaver Notes:

The pension file for Edmond Gardner noted Frank Gardner was the enslaver of him and his wife, Emily. The ledger file that was retrieved for Edward Gardner indicated John Gardner was the enslaver of that soldier. The 1860 census schedule for John Gardner indicated that Frank Gardner was a twenty-three year old, probable son of John’s. The 1850 census for John Gardner included a young male with first initial F [Frank]. The 1850 and 1860 slave schedules indicated that a male, whose age was an approximate match to Edmond/Edward Gardner was listed in John Gardner’s household. The census/slave schedules provide evidence that John Gardner was the probable enslaver prior to Frank Gardner being named as enslaver after 1860. The 1870 census linked here represents the listing for John Gardner, head of household. An 1870 Nelson County, KY census was not retrieved for Frank Gardner.
