Enslaver Information

Name: Mary L. Harrison Location:
Previous Enslaver: Julia C. Paul
Enslaver Notes:

Although the Ledger and CMSR listed J.O. Harrison as enslaver, Mary L. Harrison filed the compensation claim, as the enslaver of Edmond Mead. Mary was not retrieved on the 1860 slave schedule.

An 1860 census and slave schedule was retrieved for O. J. Harrison in Oldham County, KY, listed with a male slave matching the approximate age of Edmond Mead, but this connection was not validated during this search. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7668/images/kym653_405-0334?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=658d9bfe4995b186002eef31ab9374da&usePUB=true&_phsrc=EQf7&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_gl=1*frifpn*_gcl_au*MTEzMjU2NjQ5LjE2ODUzNzk3NTQ.&pId=92918338

Compensation Information

Compensation Applied? Yes Compensation Received? No

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
