1920 Census Notes:

I have found a George Washington as a part of the 1870 census, he is employed as a laborer. He is listed with a Margaret Washington, who is the same age as his wife. I have not seen any indication that, his wife Lucy had an alias. I can not verify that this is the same George Washington. www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/18456117:7163
Mrs. Davis/Washington is widowed and sharing a home with her son, Joe in the 1920 census.

Enslaver Information

Name: Peter Van Dyke Location: Shelby, KY
Previous Enslaver: Jas. (James) Gist
Enslaver Notes:

It seems Peter Van Dyke is working as a farmer in the 1850 census and becomes a slave owner a decade later. He dies in 1898.

George Washington Davis records list him with a total of three different enslavers, James Gist, in the descriptive ledger, William Campbell in his Freedman’s account and finally Peter W VanDyke. I was able to locate Peter Van Dyke, because he filed a slave compensation application for George Washington, he received no award.

Compensation Information

Compensation Applied? Yes Compensation Received? No

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
