Family Notes:

The death certificate entry above relates to a U.S. Register of Deaths of Volunteers entry located in Ancestry which documents the soldier by name, George Humphrey, Private, 12th USCT, passing at the General Hospital, Camp Nelson, Jessamine Co., KY, due to measles, on 28 Oct 1864.

Due to the soldier’s death in 1864 and the establishing of the Freedman’s Bank in or around 1865, any records of the soldier would be relative to a sibling, spouse or the soldier’s parents. In an abundance of caution, a name search of the soldier for Freedman’s Bureau records in Ancestry met with negative results.

1870 Census records, located in Ancestry, in conjunction with a pension index card reflecting a pension claim by the soldier’s mother, appear to support the identification of the soldier’s parents as Millie and Harrison Crume. Millie’s maiden name remains unknown.

Enslaver Information

Name: Simon Summers Humphrey Location: Nelson County, KY
Previous Enslaver: John Thompson
Enslaver Notes:

Enslaver’s Slave Schedule for 1860 failed to reflect among 6 enslaved persons anyone who met the description of the soldier by gender or age. However, soldier’s CMSR indicated that the soldier may have been held by a former owner, John Thompson. Enslaver, after previously being a farmer, was the Nelson County, KY, Sheriff, at the time of the 1870 census. Find a Grave query indicated the enslaver passed away in 1878.

Compensation Information

Compensation Applied? Yes Compensation Received? Yes

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
