Pension Notes:

George Lancaster and Laura Philips were married in June 1864 in Nelson County by Jordan Mackey, a “colored minister of the Baptist church.” Their daughter Georgia/Georgianna was born on March 2, 1865 in Bardstown.

Laura remarried to Richard Blair on December 7, 1871. The couple had a daughter, Martha Blair. Richard died of Bright’s disease on April 10, 1893 in City Hospital in Louisville. Since Georgia was still a minor, Alexander Philips was appointed her guardian for pension payment purposes on March 14, 1872.

George Lancaster’s mother Celia Lancaster was 60 years old and resided in Louisville when she filed for a dependent pension on September 19, 1890. Her application was rejected on April 3, 1895 due to a minor pension having already been approved for his daughter Georgia. There was not sufficient evidence confirming that Celia was George’s mother.

On May 3, 1901 Laura filed for restoration of widow’s pension due to the death of her second husband and having no other source of income other than her daily labor. She also claimed to have broken both arms which were left crooked and stiff. Laura owned a house and lot in Simpsonville, Shelby County, Kentucky worth $200. By March 29, 1905 she lived in Anchorage, Jefferson County, Kentucky. The renewal of Laura’s pension benefits was approved March 6, 1906.
