George Williams was assigned to 123rd Regiment, US Colored Infantry, Company A and his rank at enlistment was Private. His eyes, hair and complexion were all listed as Dark on the CMSR and his height was 5’ 7”. It should be noted that he was listed as George Williams, No2 on the CMSR.
On one of the pages of the CMSR, there is a notation: “Appear on Returns as follows: July and August 1865 – Absent on detached duty at Crittenden US Gen Hospital, Louisville, KY since July 8/65.” Private George Williams mustered out in Louisville, KY on October 16, 1865 and was last paid to June 30, 1865.

Soldier’s Parents – This researcher was not able to verify the parents of George Williams. However, on the 1870 Census, a female by the name of Millie Williams, was living in the household with enslaved master, along with George. Millie’s age at the time of enumeration was 70 years old and she was listed as mullato. She could possibly have been George’s mother, however, this researcher was not able to verify their relationship.

George Williams was listed in the household of Harrison Bailey, enslaved master in Christiansburg, Shelby, Kentucky, with his inferred spouse, Maria Williams and two inferred children, Charles and Clarence Williams. Private George Williams died on July 18, 1906, therefore, the 1900 Federal Census would have been the last time that George appeared in a household. In 1910, 1920 and 1930, Roxie Williams, maiden name Webb (wife of George Williams), was enumerated in Kentucky and Michigan.
1880 Census
George Williams (30) was enumerated in Clayville, Shelby, Kentucky, with Roxy Williams, both listed as servants. Also a child Matt Williams (3), also listed as a servant. Both George and Roxy were listed as unable to read or write. The birthplace for George and Roxie was listed as Kentcky.
1900 Census
George Williams (53) was enumerated in Christiansburg District, Shelby County, Kentucky, with his wife Roxie Williams (42). Also the following children were listed in the household: Claude Williams (19) son; Chiles Williams (17) son; Henry Williams (14) son; Harrison Williams (11) son; Susie Williams (7) daughter; Carry Williams (4) daughter; Mary Willilams (1) daughter. George’s occupation was listed as a farmer and there was no occupation listed for Roxie, his wife. All four of George’s sons’ occupations were listed as farm laborers. Both George and Roxie were listed as unable to read or write. The birthplace for George and Roxie was listed as Kentucky.

Roxie Williams (54), who appears as the head of the household, as widowed. She was enumerated In Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky. The following children were listed in the household: Henry Williams (24), son; Harrison Williams (21), son, Susie Williams (17) daughter; Mary Williams (11) daughter/ Additionally, there was a boarder listed: Wyland Sweeney (22). Roxie’s native tongue was English and her occupation was listed as a Laundress.
1920 Census
Roxie Williams (62), was listed as a boarder in the household with Claude Williams (38), who is listed as the head of the household. Roxie was listed as a widowed. It should be noted that Claude Williams was listed in the 1900 census as Roxie’s son. Roxie was enumerated in Detroit, Michigan and listed as a widower. Others listed in the household were Lena Wiliams (33), wife of Claude; Susan McClure 27) border; Oliver McClure (27) border; Mary Carway (21) border; and Helen Conway (1). Roxie was able to read and write in the 1920 census. There was no occupation listed for her in this census.
