Mahala and her husband George were not found in the index to the 1850 slave schedule in Marion County, Kentucky. Other Hamiltons in Marion owned a total of 56 slaves. Mahala and George were listed in the population schedule, Marion County, 1850. Mahala Hamilton was not located in the 1880 census in Kentucky.

In his September 28, 1853 will, George L. Hamilton, husband of Mahala Hamilton, left his estate — land, Negroes, and personal estate — to his wife. He made the following provision for 3 slaves: “It is my wish that my wife shall keep the Negro man Harrison and woman Ann and child if they suit her, but if the said slaves should not suit, and she cannot manage them. I will that the said slaves shall be sold or any part of them. And the proceeds of said slave or slaves shall be applied to the purchase of other slaves, or put on interest, as my wife shall think best.”

There was no mention of other slaves.
