According to Freedmen’s Bureau records filed in the soldier’s CMSR Harry Beeler was assaulted by his former enslaver’s son, but the enslaver’s name in the Bureau records does not correspond to other records. After his discharge from the army Harry “applied” for his wife “Ellen” and son in LaRue County. He wanted to reunite with his family. It is not known what happened to Ellen. In 1870 and 1880 Harry resided with his wife Violet.

Freedmen’s Bureau records were located in the soldier’s CMSR. After his discharge from the army, Harry Beeler returned to LaRue County, Kentucky, where some Beeler family members assaulted him in his attempt to reunite with his wife and child.

Family Notes:

Harry Beeler had at least one son — Jerry Beeler whose many descendants have been traced through the records, from Kentucky to other states, including California. Harry’s great-grandson Virgil Lucas was the first African American ever nominated to a St. Louis city-wide office (prosecuting attorney; he was defeated in the general election). He ran for the St. Louis city board of aldermen and circuit attorney but was unsuccessful. Lucas was a lawyer and a magistrate judge.

In 1850 William Beeler owned 17 slaves, including males aged 35 and 32 years, one of whom might be Harry. In 1860 William Beeler owned 11 slaves, 2 of whom were 45-year-old males, one of whom might be Harry Beeler. The 1870 census link refers to William Beeler’s son Christopher Beeler. Atkins Beeler who was mentioned in the soldier’s CMSR is on the 1870 census on the page after Christopher Beeler’s household. The link to the 1880 census refers to the widow of Christopher Beeler and his family. William Beeler’s real estate was valued at $3,000 in 1850 and 1860. (Harry Beeler was listed in his enslaver’s inventory. In an estate sale Mathew Greenwell, Sr. purchased Harry for $830 in March 1861.)
