On February 3, 1868, Nace Douglas and Henny Dorsey, also declared that they had lived together as husband and wife for the previous 29 years. It is believed that Nace and Henny are Harry’s parents. In 1880, seven children of Harry and Julia Reed lived with their parents. Baptismal records were found for several Reed children. Those church records provide the name of Julia’s enslaver. An inventory of Julia’s enslaver (Ignatius Greenwell) includes Julia and an unnamed child as well as the names of some of her and Harry’s children, although the inventory did not state relationships. The 1900 census reported that Julia was the mother of 10 children, 4 of whom were living at that time. On April 10, 1900, Harry Read wrote his will. It began “I, Henry Reed, commonly called Harry Read, . . . .” He named his wife Julia and referred to his children but did not name them. The descendants of Harry and Julia were traced through census and other records.
