Notes:

There are some inconsistencies in Henry Ingram’s age and overall information in CMSR.
The main inconsistencies are that some forms toward the end, pages 11 and 12, have him in Company B vs. K. Another inconsistency is that there are three ages — for example, on pg 3 his age is written as 21 yo, whereas pg 2 has him at age 27, and then pg 4 has him at 37 yo. Also, on page 3 in the remarks section it is written that ‘Isaac Ingram enlisted without consent of owner’ but the top of pg 3 shows ‘Henry Ingram.’ Pages 7, 11, and 12 all have Henry Ingram’s place of death in a hospital in New Albany, Indiana whereas the other forms show that he died in a hospital in Louisville, KY. The cause of death (pneumonia) *is* consistent, as is the year of death (1864) though. Perhaps the Henry (or Isaac?) that died in New Albany, Indiana may have been in Company B, however, page 7 has Ingram in Company K *and* that he died in New Albany, Indiana. Another thought or possibility is that Company K eventually ‘merged’ (for lack of a better term) with Company B after Henry Ingram’s death hence the different company letters but generally the same information in the details (i.e cause and year of death).

Pension Notes:

One child: Araminta Ingram, born April 30, 1860. Henry Ingram and Ellen Pennick married December 24, 1858. Pension certificate was issued for eight dollars per month starting July 22, 1865, additional two dollars for child, starting 1866. Widow’s claim for pension form: Ellen Ingram is reported as age 33 on March 3, 1869 making her year of birth apprx 1836. Maiden name written Penick (Pennick on other forms). The notes also further state that Ellen was ‘slave to one Mary Penick and her husband was slave to one Frank Ingram when she married. Henry and Ellen were married at “Elizabeth Ingram’s” in Green County, KY., by B.W. Penick (this is Benjamin W. Pennick — in his affidavit he states that Mary Penick, Ellen’s enslaver, is his sister). Araminta was born at the home of a John Morrison “where said Ellen was hired for that year.” Typewritten letter to the commissioner of pensions by a Mrs. Minnie Johnson (Araminta) – the letter is dated December 15, 1910. It appears that Minnie (Araminta, daughter) was inquiring about her pension. The reply (pg 24 of 35 of file) states that the pension (135840) was for Ellen with additional $2 allowed from July 25 1866 to April 29, 1876. In 1891 – 1892, Ellen reapplied for a new certificate, “said certificate was deposited in a bureau drawer for safe keeping and was literally destroyed by rats.”
pg 31 of 35 of file: Ellen died on Oct 10, 1900. Unable to find pension documents for Araminta Ingram/ Araminta Penick / Minnie Johnson / Araminta Johnson.

1870 Census Notes:

Census is for widow Ellen Penick Ingram. Household members include Hariet (likely Harriet?) Ingram, 25 yo; Araminta Ingram, 11 yo; Fanklin (Franklin) Ingram, 6 yo. ” Of note: Unsure of the relationship between Harriet Ingram, age 25, and Franklin Ingram, age 6 to Ellen Ingram (widow) and/or Henry Ingram (deceased soldier). With Franklin being 6 years old in 1870, he would have been born apprx 1864. Henry Ingram enlisted and mustered into service on June 20, 1864 and in some accounts perished July 22 or 26, 1864 (some accounts say Sept 1864); without knowing Franklin’s exact birth date it is hard to determine if Franklin was also a child of Henry and Ellen’s. However, in the pension files, only Araminta is acknowledged as a child of Ellen and Henry in the documents, letters, and affidavits. Perhaps Harriet is a sister of Henry’s (hence the same last name Ingram) and that Franklin is Hariet’s child? It should also be noted that in the census, Ellen’s neighbors were also Penicks (Ellen’s maiden name) and Black/mulatto — no white Penicks; Ellen’s dwelling is #115 — both dwellings #114 and #116 were Penick households.

1880 Census Notes:

Census is for widow Ellen Penick Ingram. Household includes: Frank Ingram, 15yo listed as ‘grandson’; Jane Ingram, 9 yo, listed as daughter. Here, Frank (Franklin, in the 1870 census) is listed as Ellen’s *grandchild.* Jane, 9 yo, is listed as ‘daughter’ — unsure who the father was as she would have been born around the year 1871. Notably, Araminta is not enumerated here: there are two censuses for 1880, Kentucky with a Minnie Johnson, born about 1860; one is in Woodford county and the other is in Bourbon county. ‘Minnie’s’ spouse’s name in Woodford county is Price Johnson; in Bourbon county ‘Minnie’s’ spouse’s name is Solomon Johnson. In the 1900 and 1910 census her husband is listed as Mar and then Marsh Johnson. Also, considering in 1870 Araminta was still living with her mother in Green County, and then in the 1900 and 1910 census she is still in Green county implies that Araminta perhaps moved or that she is not a match to the Minnie Johnson’s in Woodford and Bourbon counties.

1900 Census Notes:

Pension documents indicate that Ellen died on October 10, 1900. This 1900 census is for who might be Henry and Ellen’s daughter Araminta. The census has her name as Minney Johnson, born Jan 1861, and the census is for Green County, KY. Inferred husband’s name is transcribed as Mar Johnson. The census indicates they have been married for 4 years (apprx 1896). There is an aunt in the household, born June 1849 — her name is hard to read due to the handwriting but it’s been transcribed as Pinick Kanet Johnson — and we know that Ellen’s maiden surname was Pennick. Perhaps the aunt was a sister of Ellen’s? While this could be a stretch I believe it is still plausible.

Enslaver Information

Name: Isaac Ingram Location: District 1, Green County, KY
Previous Enslaver: Elizabeth Ingram
Enslaver Notes:

There is documentation in the widow’s pension file where it explicitly states that ‘Frank Ingram’ was the enslaver of Henry Ingram and that Mary Penick was the enslaver of Henry’s wife/widow, Ellen Penick. 1850 and 1860 census and slave schedules enumerated Elizabeth Ingram, the woman whose household was named in the widow’s pension file, as the location of the marriage between Henry Ingram and Ellen Penick. Elizabeth, with a presumed son, Isaac was enumerated in 1850 and 1860.
In the 1860 federal census, E. Ingram was noted as having a personal estate value of $10,138, and presumed son, Isaac with a $2,000 personal estate value.
Henry Ingram’s CMSR (page 3) that Isaac Ingraham was the enslaver by 1864.
