Family Notes:

A pension card provides supporting evidence for family members of soldier Jesse Board. His mother was Eliza Farrer, sister Amanda Lewis, widow Caroline Board, and “minor” Martha Board. It is not likely Jesse had any other children, since he was age 20 when he went into the military, and he died in service. If he had had any other children, they would have likely been named on the pension card.

In addition to some census records, there is a city directory listing in 1888 that shows Caroline Board living with a Martha Board at 164 West 4th Street in New Albany, Indiana. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/2469/images/10856364?pId=557167564

No records have been retrieved for mother Eliza Farrer or sister Amanda Lewis.

1870 Census Notes:

In the 1870 census, there is a likely record for Jesse Board’s widow, Caroline, who is 23 years old, living in Breckinridge County, the same county Jesse lived in before the war. Caroline is living with Ben Board (head of house, age 34), Martha Board (age 25), and Henry Board (age 10). They are all listed as mulatto. There are several white Board families living nearby, so it is possible Caroline had previously been enslaved by the Board famiy too.

1880 Census Notes:

There is a POSSIBLE record for Jesse Board’s widow, Caroline Board, in the 1880 census. This record shows a “Carrie” Board living in New Albany, Indiana, as a seamstress. She is age 32 and described as mulatto. She was born in Kentucky, and both of her parents were born in Kentucky. She is living on Lower 5th Street/Avenue. [This woman is about the right age, and she is described as mulatto. She is living in New Albany, where it is believed she lived in 1888. However, there is no other corroborating evidence to support this “Carrie” being Jesse’s widow, “Caroline.”
