Mustered Where: Louisville, Kentucky
Mustered Out Date: March 21, 1866

Notes:

John Nelson was described as 18 years old, 5 foot 7 inches, a farmer, with black eyes, hair, complexion. He was born in Nelson County, but not credited to Nelson County. He was credited to Jefferson County, District 5. This discrepancy raises some questions as to where John Nelson was living when he enlisted. It should be noted, that one of the enslaver’s brothers, Dr. Ambrose E. Geoghegan (1818-1882), also an enslaver, lived on a large farm Jefferson County. In July 1865, Private John Nelson was on duty as the company cook (page 13). He was mustered out on March 21, 1866 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The CMSR indicates that the soldier’s enslaver filed a compensation claim, however, there was no evidence included to suggest that his claim was accepted or that compensation was made.

Enslaver Information

Name: John Hollan Geoghegan Jr. Location: Nelson County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver: John Hollan Geoghegan Sr.
Enslaver Notes:

John H. Geoghegan Jr., in his “slave claim” documents, stated that John Nelson was a “gift” to him from his father (John H. Geoghegan Sr., 1782-1854) in 1849, when the Geoghegans lived in Hardin County. John Nelson would have only been about three years old at the time. The 1850 Slave Schedule shows that John H. Geoghegan Jr. enslaved three persons, however, none who matched the description of John Nelson. John H. Geoghegan relocated to Nelson County by 1860. The 1860 Slave Schedule for John H. Geoghegan Jr. does include one 15 year old male that is a possible match for John Nelson. When John Nelson enlisted in the USCI, he was credited to Jefferson County, not Nelson County. It should be noted that Geoghegan had a brother (Ambrose E. Geoghegan, physician and farmer) who lived in Jefferson County at the time. John H. Geoghegan Jr. died in Nelson County on March 2, 1872. Although he filed paperwork for compensation, no documentation was located that indicated that his claim was paid. His widow, Catherine Troutman Geoghegan (1829-1911), died in Nelson County. She was buried with her husband in the Abell Cemetery near Boston (Nelson County). None of John H. Geoghegan’s siblings or parents are buried in Nelson County. Most are buried in Hardin County.
