One of the company descriptive cards incorrectly records John Southgate having enlisted May 20, 1864 at Covington, Ky. The Claim for Widow’s Pension document also listed May 20, 1864 as soldier’s enrollment date. The CMSR card may have noted the enlistment date (May 20th) for William L. Southgate, the brother of John Southgate. The two brothers were initially assigned to Co. A of the 107th; William was eventually transferred to Co. G of the 107th. John A. Southgate’s ledger files noted June 8, 1864 as his enlistment date.

Mary Southgate is very likely attending college at Oberlin, Ohio during the time she applied for her widow’s pension. She briefly returned to Falmouth,Ky and taught school there before relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio some time after 1880.

John A. Southgate was married to Mary Warner on December 26, 1859, by a Methodist minister, George Wyatt. They were both residents of Kentucky and never had any children together. According to Mary’s pension she and John were free persons of color. John Southgate was enrolled and mustered on May 20, 1864, at Covington, Kentucky. He died on November 16, 1864, from acute bronchitis at a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Mary Warner resided in Lorain County, Ohio.
