Pension Notes:

A second minor pension application was filed for Stephen Hays March 20, 1896 (#419521) but no certificate was granted. This may have been due to questions surrounding Hays’ paternity as his name does not appear on the Freedmen’s Bank Record signature card for Louis Hays.

Family Notes:

By 1866, both Louis and his wife Maria were deceased so the children were left in the care of guardians or were hired out to various farms as laborers and servants. For example, daughter Ellen marries Billy Garrison in 1871 and the witness to the union is her named guardian Priscilla Wathen. Priscilla, who also used the surname Hays, is in the 1870 census for Nelson County with another Hays child, Benjamin, in her household with brother George Wathen.
Could not find credible data to confirm identity of George Hays as Louis Hays’ son; several records exist for a George Hays but none definitively link him to Louis & Maria Hays.
