In 1880, Lewis lived in Salt Creek, Reno County, Kansas with his brother-in-law Abraham Taylor (43), his wife Alice Taylor (26), their daughter Florence Taylor (8), and nephews Johnny Jones (10) and Kane Rosater (9), and niece Flora Pence (3). Lewis and Abraham were both farming. The children were born in Indiana except for Flora who was born in Mississippi. The assumption can be made that Lewis was the brother of Alice, but no additional information was located confirming that.

In 1910, Lewis (73) was enumerated with wife Patsie Overall (42) and rented a home at 2035 N. Water Street in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas. Patsie was born about 1868 in Kentucky, she and Lewis married about 1894, and she had never given birth. Also in the household was boarder Earnest Smith (42), a single laborer in brick work.

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
