Pension Notes:

Lewis Williams’ widow, Margaret Hogans Williams, applied for Widow’s Pension March 19, 1868. She stated that she was 55 years old, which would put her birth year around 1813. She lived on 6th Street, between Chestnut and Broadway in Louisville, Kentucky at the time of application. Her attorney was H. M. Carr of Louisville, Kentucky.

Two witnesses, Thomas Coward and William Barnett (who were in Co. D of the 125th USCI), testified that they were present when Margaret Hogans and Lewis Williams were married on November 15, 1853 at the home of Mrs. Cannon, which is 5 miles from Louisville on the Shelbyville Pike. They were married by Rev. Adam Brown, “Colored Baptist Minister,” who died August 20, 1855 at the residence of Widow Cannon. On March 24, 1868, Margaret was awarded a pension of $8 per month “commencing 1/22/1866.” Every statement about children was specific to say “no children born of this marriage who are now under 16 years of age”. The wording makes one think there might have been children who are over 16 at the time of the application.

In 1876, Margaret Williams applied for a duplicate pension certificate because the first pension certificate was in a “mutilated condition.” A new certificate was issued January 11, 1876. Margaret Williams lived on 3rd St. between Green and Walnut in Louisville, Kentucky at the time of application for duplicate. All testimonies and proofs had to be supplied again.
On November 27, 1882, Margaret Williams applied for another duplicate certificate because her pension certificate was lost and “every effort that a human being could make has been made to recover it, but without effect.” The lost certificate was found January 22, 1883 and her application for a duplicate was withdrawn.

1870 Census Notes:

In 1870, Margaret Williams was enumerated in the ninth ward of Louisville, Kentucky (line 7). She was reportedly 60 years old and could not read or write. A 25-year-old man named Ben Williams was also enumerated. He was a railroad worker and could not read or write. Margaret Williams’ pension file specified the couple had no children under the age of 16, implying that they did have adult children who would not have been eligible for a pension. Ben Williams would have been considered an adult by the time Margaret Williams’ application was filed, so it is possible that he is their son, but there is no direct evidence to support this.

Enslaver Information

Name: Anna Cannon Location: Jefferson County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver:
Enslaver Notes:

Lewis Williams and Margaret Hogans were married at the home of Mrs. Cannon (also called Widow Cannon), Lewis’ possible enslaver in 1850.

In 1850, Ann Cannon was reportedly 66 years old with real estate valued at $15,000. Also enumerated in her home:
Virginia Cannon, age 22
Edward Cannon, age 29, Farmer
John Thatcher, age 26, Merchant
Mildred Thatcher, age 24
Emma Thatcher, age 3
Adda Thatcher, age 7/12

The accompanying 1850 slave schedule shows that Ann Cannon enslaved 20 people. One was a 23 year old male who would be in the right age range to be Lewis Williams.

Ann Cannon died on February 24, 1860. Aside from bequests made to her children and grandchildren, she left instructions and money to her son-in-law to provide care for four older servants: Savannah, Jefferson, Anthony & Arthur. No mention is made about the other enslaved people. A search was made to find the appraisal and settlement for this estate, but it is not available online for Jefferson County. More research would reveal who was the actual enslaver of Lewis Williams in 1860.
