A hint in Ancestry regarding Ludwell Beam led to the identification of 3 public family trees: William Spriggs, Lynn Miller and Regis Williams. The trees indicate that the father of Ludwell Beam was Solomon Beam and his mother was Charlotte Beam nee Dodson. The Division of Property for deceased Jonathan Dodson, recorded in 1863, listed Solomon and Charlotte as enslaved individuals. Both were of an appropriate age to be probable parents of Ludwell Beam and Hines Foster Beam.

Further, information gleaned from the trees indicated that Hines Beam aka Hines Foster (10303), was the brother of Ludwell. The Spriggs tree further listed the children of Solomon and Charlotte as Mary, Hines (10303), Emiline, Ludwell (the soldier), Florence, Nancy, Kate, Josie and Anna. No supporting documents were found to corroborate the relationships between the soldier and any of these possible family members. The probate document for Jonathan Dodson that was located in Family Search divided among his heirs those individuals who were enslaved along with real estate after the enslaver’s death. Both Hines and the soldier (Ludwell) were listed together in the list of males. In the course of other research during which documents of this type have been located, siblings often were listed together. In addition, prior research regarding Hines Beam identified his enslaver as R.G. Foster. Research reflected R.G. Foster was the husband of Dodson’s daughter, Bettie, to whom Hines (Hynes) was one of 3 enslaved individuals received by her. Based upon this development and Hines and Ludwell being listed together in the inventory of the enslaved individuals in this document, it is believed that it is more likely than not that Ludwell and Hines were siblings.
