Appointed sergeant in May 1864; reduced also in 1864. Retained weapon and accoutrements at discharge. Married – wife was enslaved by Lemuel English of Louisville KY. Jacobs received a furlough of 15 days to visit Louisville, where civil authorities arrested him. He had called upon his wife’s enslaver so that he could manumit her, but English said Jacobs was interfering with his slaves. Jacobs was eventually sent back to Virginia to reunite with his regiment. “Police proceedings” in the Courier-Journal (Louisville, Feb. 25, 1865) referred to Martin as a “free Negro.”

Martin Jacobs married Antonia Block in Chicago on Dec. 21, 1895. Eight days later he died in Chicago.
Martin Jacobs and Mary Sigmon, both colored, were married on Oct. 24, 1871, in Clark County, Indiana. It is possible that he was the soldier. In 1872, Martin Jacobs enlisted in the US Army in Owensville, Indiana. He was born in Shelby County, Kentucky, in about 1839. He deserted on Oct. 7, 1873. It is not certain if this is the USCT soldier.
