Pension Notes:
1. Solder claimed he contracted rheumatism and chronic diarrhea while stationed at Taylor Barracks in Louisville, KY from impure water and an improper diet. He contracted smallpox while trying to recover from the two previous disabilities and became partially deaf as well. He suffered and worsened from these until his death in 1902 according to all the statements made in his file.
2. Soldier originally enlisted in 122nd Regiment, but by the time he was discharged, he was in the 123rd Regiment (The 123rd USCI was composed of men who although not able bodied, were nevertheless capable of performing garrison duty and duty in the engineer, quartermaster, or commissary department).
3. Soldier lived in Bardstown, KY after discharge until about 1881, then moved to Louisville, KY and remained until his death.
4. Soldier had 3 enslavers during his lifetime (that he knows of). His first owner was Elizabeth Mondy, second owner was Jimmie Thomas, and last owner was Joe Crumes. I did not find any enslavers with the last name Mondy (Mundy, Munday or Monday) in the Lemons Database. I did find a James Thomas in the Lemons Database, unsure if it’s the Jimmie Thomas that Moses states since he does not mention location for any of the enslavers.
5. Soldier’s widow stated they were married on Oct 15th, 1856 in Bardstown, KY. This date matches with the estimated date they gave when they filed their declaration of marriage.
6. Soldier owned a home and lot at 1701 W Ormsby Ave in Louisville, KY before his death in 1902, which transferred to Annie until her death in 1905.

Family Notes:
Soldier also had an 11th child, Mary Catherine Crume, born in 1884.
I have listed 2 John’s under soldier’s children. There was a John in the 1870 census born in 1862, a John in the 1880 census born in 1873, and a child John B living in 1898 which I’ve found the birthdate to be 1879. I believe the John in the 1880 census and the John that is living while he is working on his pension are the same person. I believe the first John born in 1862 had died earlier. I have not found any death record proving for sure, but the DOB of the two are very different, so I do not believe they are the same John.
I believe Mariah to be the mother of Moses as she was living with him and his family in the 1870 census. Although they were transferred to separate enslavers in 1850, they found their way back to each other and were living together in 1870 as noted and there are no other documents showing otherwise.
I’ve confirmed Redmond to be a brother to Moses from a pension file retrieved from NARA by Emily V. Birch. The pension file was on a John Calvin Crume. He was not a relative to Moses or Redmond, but grew up with them. John’s widow, Louisa, made a statement in 1898 that Redmond was a brother of Moses. I couldn’t link this as the pension file is not available online, but have uploaded these specific pages to Moses’s file.
I was able to confirm John as a brother of Moses as well due to the confirmation of Redmond being a brother of John. Redmond’s son was living with John in the 1880 census and listed as nephew.

Moses was enumerated under the same dwelling number as John Crooms (Spelled Crume in this census), 53. However the family number is different. John was 55, Moses was 56. Through my research, I do not believe they were related, but had the same enslaver. Moses was enumerated with his wife Ann, 6 reported children, and mother Mariah Crume (Spelled Maria in census) in Nelson County, KY. Moses was also living next door to a Redmond Crume, who I also do not believe was related in any way, but had the same enslaver.

Enslaver Information
Name: Joseph Crume Location: Nelson County, Kentucky, USA
Previous Enslaver: James Thomas
Enslaver Notes:
For 1850, I attached William M Foster instead of James W Thomas. James was living with William in the 1850 census, and the transfer of slaves didn’t happen until Dec 1850. So these census schedulws would have been enumerated while William Foster was still the guardian of James and Susan as well as Mariah, Redmond, Moses and John.
