1880 Census Notes:

Nelson Clark was enumerated in the 1880 Census as “Nelson Hayden.” His spouse and children were also listed with the Hayden surname. This is the only Census year in which Nelson Clark and his immediate family were recorded with the “Hayden” surname. It is possible that this was an error by the enumerator but evidence suggests that there was a connection between the “Hayden” name and Nelson Clark. For example, his daughter’s 1887 marriage bond listed her name as “Mary Hayden,” but her son’s death certificate stated her her maiden name as “Mary Clark.” One of his grandsons was named Joseph Hayden Ballard, and a great-grandson, Hayden Eugene Ballard. Also, this soldier’s enslaver, Edwin C. Clark, has Hayden relatives in his family tree. Additional research, however, is needed to establish this link. Nelson Clark died before the 1900 Census was conducted. After Nelson Clark’s death, his widow, Ellen Clark, lived with her daughter Mary Clark Ballard Clemens.
