Kiger served as a substitute for his enslaver W. M. Rice. The captain at Taylor Barracks stated that “He (Kiger) was not among those gobbled from the pens, but was taken in the street by his own consent. The negro received $25 for his share in going for Mr. Rice.”

Nicholas “Keiger” married Mary Williams, on May 3, 1873, in Clark County, Indiana. At least three newspapers — Chicago Tribune, August 22, 1873, p. 3; Los Angeles Daily Star, 17 Sep 1873, p. 2; and The Belvidere Standard, Belvidere, Illinois, Sept. 09, 1873, p 8 — reported that Nicholas was fined $1,000 and sentenced to the Indiana state penitentiary for one year for marrying a white woman.
In his November 29, 1873, will filed in Clark County, Indiana, Frederick “Keiger” bequeathed $1 each to his daughter Amanda and son Nicholas. He left the family residence in Jeffersonville to his wife Milly. The will was probated on January 21, 1876. Frederick did not mention any other family members.
