Enslaver Information
Name: Charles L. Lewis Location: Nelson County, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver: Joseph G. Wilson
Enslaver Notes:
In 1850 Joseph G. Wilson was the enslaver of Notley Lewis. Links and data for the 1850 census are for Wilson in Nelson County. Data for 1860 is for Charles L. Lewis who was Notley’s enslaver at the time Notley enlisted.
In 1850 and 1860 Charles Lewis resided in Nelson County, Kentucky, with at least 3 of his children (children were named in his will which was probated in 1869; Will Book 14: 524-525, Nelson County.). No possible wife appeared in either the 1850 or 1860 Lewis household. Lewis married Sarah Ann Wilson in December 1839 in Nelson County. The value of his real estate more than doubled from 1850 to 1860. The number of his slaves increased from 17 to 31 during that same period. One of his slaves in 1860 was a 15-year-old male who could have been Charles Lewis who would have been 15 in 1860.
