On Sept. 27, 1866, Susan King, aged 40 years, applied for a pension. She stated that her husband Smith King died after he was discharged from service at Jefferson Co., KY, on April 25, 1866; that he was free from disease when he enlisted; that he died of an illness contracted while in his line of duty with his regiment; that she was married in Nelson Co. on May 15, 1852; that her maiden name was Susan Bell (slave of John M. Bell); and that she lived about 10 miles north of Bardstown. She named her children and their birthdates.
Dr. John J. Bell testified on Aug. 24, 1866, that he knew Smith King all his (Bell’s) life and, for example, that he died of a disease contracted while he was in the army. His wife was with him when he died.
William Lewis, a clergyman, stated that on or about, May 15, 1852, he married Smith King and Susan King (born Bell) in Nelson Co. Lewis made his mark.

Margaret King was born March 13, 1853, near Fairfield, KY.

Abner King (enslaver of Smith King) and John M. Bell stated that they were well acquainted with Mrs. Smith King and Smith King and that they cohabitated together as husband and wife for 12 years; that they (A. King and J. M. Bell) at the time of Smith’s service lived in the same neighborhood as Smith; and that he died April 25, 1866, after he was discharged, unknown disease.
