It is likely that John H. Kean’s mother was Mahala (maiden name unknown) Simmons, who was free as early as 1860, and residing with her husband, Henry Simmons in Jefferson County, KY. She had a daughter, Matilda (maiden name unknown) Dell, who was probably the soldier’s sister. She, too was free, living with her husband Lewis Dell in 1860 in Jefferson County, KY in an area with many other free persons of color. An Evidence Analysis has been completed and uploaded to John H. Kean’s soldier folder in the KY USCT drive.

Compensation Information

Compensation Applied? Yes Compensation Received? No

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
