Milton Vandike was discharged from service on 13 December 1865 for physical disability, at Okolona, MS, by order of Major General Th. J. Wood. Milton Vandike did not muster out with his company and regiment at Vicksburg, MS. The certificate of the soldier’s discharge is included as page 21 of his CMSR file. A contributing cause to his disability was described as . . . “The soldier seems to have been broken down at hard labor while a slave.” Milton’s physical disability was described as phthsis, an older term for pulmonary tuberculosis.
The CMSR noted that Travers Matticks was name of the enslaver.

Milton may have been aboard the USS Maria Denning, a boat used to transport 108th soldiers to Vicksburg.

Milton’s first wife, Ellen is only noted in their son’s death certificate. She is listed as Vandike as last name. Unsure if this was a marriage during slavery and it is unknown what happened to her. Upon William’s death, his last name was noted as Dennis.

Milton and Fannie were enumerated in the 1880 federal census in Jefferson County, KY, using the surname Simmons, as noted on the pension index card. A daughter, Fannie, born about 1873 and a son, Morris was born about 1878. Fannie’s occupation was listed as “Keeping House”. Milton’s listing did not note that he could not read or write.

Milton and Fanny Simmons were enumerated with their son, Morris (22) and his wife Mary (22) and son Aron (40). A younger daughter, Anie M age 10 also resided in the household. Fanny was listed as a washerwoman, and Morris was listed as a day laborer. The Simmons family resided on Hancock Alley, according to the census enumeration.
