Pension Notes:
The pension application file documented that Moses Snowden and Ellen Coleman married in 1859. The file also confirmed Ellen’s maiden name as Coleman. This was attested to by Betsy Kemp and Judy Green, two women who witnessed the marriage. The couple had a total of four children; Sarah, Jack, Thomas and Moses. Moses was only surviving child to qualify for a minor’s pension. The 1870 Jefferson County, KY federal census information for Ellen’s older children conflicts with that which was offered in the pension application file. The pension file named Moses Snowden as the only surviving child of the couple. In 1870 Sarah, John (Jack), Thomas and Moses resided in their grandmother’s (Judy Green) household with their mother Ellen Snowden. The ages of the oldest children indicated 1851, 1852 and 1856 as their respective birth years. The older children may have been children born to Ellen prior to her marrying Moses Snowden in 1859. The midwife, E. D. Foree attended Ellen at the birth of Moses in August 1862, and she attested to Ellen being the slave of James Coleman. The son, Moses Snowden was eligible for pension payments until August 1878 when he turned sixteen years of age. Ellen’s widow pension payments were dropped in 1900, after the pension bureau received notification her death.

Notes from Freedmen’s Bureau Documents:
Ellen Snowden file a claim with the Louisville Freedmen’s Bureau office, asserting that a Sgt. Lunkin was supposed to give her $22 that was owed to her, then deceased husband, Moses Snowden. The claim was the money was not given to her. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/3403849:62309?tid=&pid=&queryId=4f2d4f7206d26feb357ee01b8051637e&_phsrc=IhC9173&_phstart=successSource
