Enslaver Information

Name: William H Stokes
Location: Louisville, Jefferson Co, Kentucky
Previous Enslaver:
Enslaver Notes:

The actual enslaver for Robert Stokes was William H Stokes, the brother of John M Stokes. John M Stokes was a cabinet maker and owned a prosperous furniture business. The enslaved Robert Stokes was hired out to John Stokes. At the time of Robert’s enlistment in 1864, John Stokes was listed as owner; evidently military officials did not make the distinction between legal owner and employer-owner. John M Stokes died in 1866 and William Stokes died in 1874.

Compensation Information

Compensation Applied? No Compensation Received? No

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
