Family Notes:

Notes re Death date. National Cemetary Internment card (STAMPED Sept 26th, 1961) intended for Jackson Thornton who served in the 123rd USCI references a death date April 2, 1894. Review of the original Mortuary Record Jefferson County Kentucky notes the death is for a 46 year old man. This soldier would have been 75 years old. The military headstone cites this same death date. ( was it installed in 1961?) . A Find A Grave memorial for a white Jackson Thornton features this military headstone with an inscription 123rd USCI.

Compensation Information

Compensation Applied? No Compensation Received? No

Note: The Lincoln Administration offered compensation of $300 to enslavers in Kentucky and other Union states where slavery was still legal for each of their enslaved men that joined the Union Army. However to be eligible, they had to prove ownership of the soldier and have sworn testimony from others that they were loyal to the Union. Many applied, but were not approved for compensation payments.
