On March 21, 1865 was appointed Sergeant at reorganization of Company B. In March – April of 1867 was held in close confinement; charges unknown but May+June, 1867 show he owed the govt. $20 for ordnance. In that same period he was on detached service per G.O. 102 HQ Fort Craig, NM (noted June 29, 1867). On July +Aug 1867 card it is noted he owes govt. $4.30 for ordnance. Jan-May 1866 card states he was acting commissary (?) Sgt. of Co. B. Jan 1867 he is listed absent due to performing escort duty per G.O. no 15, Fort Craig, NM (dated Jan 30, 1867). On March 1, 1867 Wooten shot and killed another soldier, Private John Hockenstaller, Co B. 3rd Res. Cavalry. His CMSR contains a letter with specifics. He is tried in a civil court in Albuquerque, NM and is acquitted of any charges on May 8, 1867. On Aug 17, 1867 Lt. R. Kerr sends letter requesting reduction in rank, as soldier was absent without leave. A follow-up letter on this matter was sent by Kerr on Aug 20, 1867 requesting this charge be withdrawn due to soldiers previous good conduct.
On Sept 20, 1867 Lt. Kerr writes another letter requesting soldier be reduced to the ranks for being absent without leave, and “getting drunk so as being unable to converse in a manner respecting his commanding officer.” A note states soldier was reduced to Private on Sept 21, 1867.

Jake Wooden, son of the soldier applied for a Freedman’s Bank account in 1872. He named Jake and Julia Wooden as his parents, and reported he had four brothers and two sisters at the time. His occupation was School Boy. Julia Wooden’s 1900 census schedule noted she had given birth to ten children with three surviving by 1900.
