Freedman’s Bank/Freedmen’s Bureau Information

Freedman’s Bank Link: View
Freedman’s Bank Notes:

There are two Freedman’s Bank records; one appears to be from 1866 and the other from Jan. 5, 1867. The 1867 record states Albert Troutman served in the 107th USCI, Co. H. His wife is Caroline, and he has three children: Alice, Abner, and Louis. They live in Hardin County, Kentucky. Albert’s “master” is named as Warren Troutman, which is different from the name listed on the Descriptive Lists ledger.

The other record is not dated; however, the record above Albert’s appears to be from 1866. There is no wife listed, but children are Alice, John H., Abner, Louis, and Henry? Name of Master: Warren W. Troutman.

Family Notes:

Abner Troutman was 33 years old when he mustered in to the US Colored Infantry. Freedman’s Bank records provide evidence that Abner/Albert was married before the war to wife #1, Caroline, with whom he had children Alice, Abner Jr., Louis, Charles, and John H. [A Henry is listed as “Henry Miller” on the 1870 Census, but is named as “Henry Troutman” on the 1880 Census. There is a widow’s pension card that provides evidence that Abner had another family after the war, with wife #2, Lottie. The 1880 Census lists three daughters and two sons: Henry (who may have been “Henry Miller” from the 1870 Census), Martha (“Mattie”), David, Ella, and Sharlotte (“Lottie”).

The names “Abner” and “Albert” are found in several documents, both before and after the war. It seems likely he used both names; however, it is more likely that his name was Abner, as he named one of his sons “Abner Jr.”

Enslaver Information

Name: Edmond Taylor
Location:
Previous Enslaver: Warren W. Troutman
Enslaver Notes:

There were two named enslavers found for Abner/Albert Troutman. On the Descriptive Lists ledger, the enslaver is named Edmond Taylor. After the war, in two separate Freedman’s Bank records, Abner names Warren W. Troutman as his enslaver. It is possible Abner/Albert was born to Warren Troutman, as he has that surname, and then it is possible that he was sold to Edmond Taylor sometime before Abner/Albert’s war service.
