Pension Notes:

It was noted that a review of the pension index cards disclosed the invalid (Joseph Wathan), widow (Fannie Wathan) and other pension claims (minor – Fannie Milan Guardian) were all filed from Indiana. Relative to the minor pension, two minor children were identified at the time of soldier’s death in 1890 (son – Henry William Wathan and daughter Annie Wathan). The minor pension was filed with soldier’s surviving spouse remarrying in 1892 and named as guardian.

This URL links to a Courier Journal newspaper article regarding the accidental death of Joseph Wathen and others in 1890. https://drive.google.com/file/d/12LvcFdvWBLNp97ZEqIPwjPSQGPwfcKgw/view?usp=sharing

A query in Family Search reflected a marriage of a Joseph Wathen to a Mary Isabella Bowman in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana, on 6 June 1869, by a Catholic Priest, Ernest Audran.

However, neither of the records (Ancestry is index only) indicate the race of the couple as some other records document. However there is an 1880 census name match to the soldier with a wife named Belle and an inferred child, Mary, age 6. As well, the employment for
Joseph Wathan on the 1880 census is consistent with other information (a corker at a shipyard). Also noted is that the race on the census record for the family is Black. While it is highly possible that this is the soldier, there is no immediate corroborating information and initial efforts to follow either Belle Wathen or Mary Wathen have met with negative results. Based on the noted information matches as to type of employment, race and geographic location, this information is being carried over to the database for future consideration should any information surface to confirm or refute that this is the soldier.

Marriage (10 October 1885) Records: A query in Ancestry reflected among Indiana U.S. Marriages 1810-2001, an indexed record documenting the marriage of Joseph Wathen to Fannie Hall on 10 October 1885, in Indiana. (pg 285 FHL film#001415855)

A query in Family Search reflected an unofficial copy of the above marriage record. This document indicated that Joseph “Wathin” was married to Fannie Hall on 10 October 1885 with the ceremony officiated by John Ware. An attempt to capture the link resulted in the below being captured.
