After Charles Anderson Wickliffe’s death in 1869, his daughter Julia Wickliffe Beckham (1835-1913) and family continued to live at the Wickliffe family estate, “Wickland,” located just outside of Bardstown. “Wickland” exists today as a historic site in Nelson County. The Wickliffe family was wealthy and politically connected. Julia Wickliffe Beckham’s son, John Crepps Wickliffe Beckham (1869-1940), served as Governor of Kentucky from 1900 to 1907. He came into office as a result of the assassination of Governor William Goebel (1856-1900). Beckham was Goebel’s running mate.
